Ozone Therapy

Ozone is produced in nature by lightning and ultraviolet irradiation. It often has a negative connotation because it’s an easy measurement to gauge how bad pollution is in an area.

When smog levels are high, so is the ozone level. Ozone is created as a byproduct to help neutralize the pollution. Because ozone is far easier to measure than the pollution itself, we can tell where the pollution is greatest by measuring the amount of ozone being created in the same area.

Ozone can also be created by machines. Medical grade ozone consists of three molecules of high-grade pure oxygen called O3. Non-medical ozone is usually produced with ambient oxygen which his 21% oxygen and 76% nitrogen. The added nitrogen creates unfavorable additives that are considered unsafe regarding ozone therapy. However, non-medical grade ozone is very helpful for purifying water and sanitizing surfaces. This is because ozone neutralizes viruses, bacteria, and other harmful contaminants. When used properly medical ozone therapy has shown to have no side-effects.

When ozone therapy is performed through IV or insufflations, the body treats ozone as an anti-inflammatory agent. It helps improve detoxification processes, modulated immune system and aids in the production of ATP.

Multiple applications of ozone available include:

  • Insufflations (rectal, vaginal, ear, nose)
  • Ozonated Water
  • Breathing Ozone (through oil)

More advanced applications of ozone therapy offered at Panacea Biomedical Institute include:

  • Ozonated Normal Saline Drips (Russian Protocol): ozonating 500mL – 1 L of normal saline and infusing intravenously.
  • Major Autohemotherapy: your blood is drawn and collected into an IV bag and then mixed with medical ozone. After your blood and ozone are mixed in the bag, the mixture is dripped back into your vein.
  • Minor Autohemotherapy (MiAHT): Small about of your blood is mixed directly with ozone and this mixture is given intramuscularly. The immune system reacts to this ozone enriched blood with higher activity and production of antibodies. MiAHT is a non-specific immunoactivator with benefit in any condition.
  • Prolozone (musculoskeletal applications): Prolozone Injections combine homeopathy, vitamins, and ozone. First, homeopathic anti-inflammatory medications are injected into the injured area to reduce inflammation and swelling, and ultimately increase circulation. Next, vitamins and minerals are added to the injured site for faster healing. Finally, the area is injected with oxygen in the form of ozone.

Ozone applications help with multiple medical conditions. Major benefits include:

  • Enhancing immune response by decreasing inflammatory cytokines and increasing the production of interleukin 2 and tumor necrosis factor
  • Providing more oxygen to cells and tissues
  • Facilitating efficient energy production by increasing cellular energy in the form of ATP
  • Antimicrobial action to kill mold, yeast, viruses, and bacteria
  • Reducing over-oxidation levels in the body
  • Attracting healing cells like fibroblasts and chondrocytes to set off a tissue regeneration reaction

Potential side effects may include:

  • Accidental inhalation may lead to minor symptoms like burning of eyes, coughing, nausea or vomiting, or mild headache in very sensitive individual.
  • Rectal insufflations may very rarely give mild discomfort, a feeling of passing gas, gurgling, or mild cramps. This is all temporary, mild and passes quickly.
  • Sometimes a patient may have a Herxheimer (Healing) Reaction (detoxification & healing symptoms) during which a patient may feel flu-like symptoms or feel a bit worse temporarily; this improves on continuation of therapy. NOTE: This is not an Ozone side effect but a natural healing process seen in other modalities as well.

There are rare contra-indications, but these include blood coagulation disorders, low platelets, 1st trimester pregnancy, and G6PD deficiency.
